Samford University Library

Samford University was founded by Baptists as Howard College in Marion, Alabama, in 1841. Located in Birmingham since 1887, the school is Alabama's largest private university and the state's only private doctoral/research university as classified by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Samford continues to value its historic relationship with the state's Baptists.

The Association was originally constituted in 1816 as the Beckbe association by churches in Clarke and Washington counties. The name changed to Bethlehem in 1827. It was under the leadership of Alexander Travis and was the second Baptist association to be in Alabama and the first association formed on Alabama soil.

The association was formed by churches in the Autauga and Mulberry Associations in 1855. In 1953 a joint committee from Unity and Chilton Baptist Associations recommended a merger to form the Chilton-Unity Baptist Association. A few churches continued as the Unity Missionary Baptist Association.

The Providence Baptist Association was constituted in 1855 of churches in Alabama and Mississippi in Jackson County MS. In 1878 the name was changed to the Gulf Coast Association. In 1880 the Alabama churches withdrew and formed a new association which became the Mobile Baptist Association.
